Account & Signup
Is Kosalo available on iPhone?
Not yet. Kosalo is currently available for Android users on the Play Store — we're working on bringing it to iPhone. See Getting Started.
My Secretary already added me — do I still need to sign up myself?
Yes. If your Secretary has already added you as a member, your account is partially created and waiting for you. Sign up using the same phone number your Secretary has on file, and Kosalo will match you to your group automatically.
Will I lose the records from before I signed up?
No. Once you're linked to your existing group, all your previously recorded contributions are restored — you'll see everything your Secretary already recorded for you, even from before you registered.
Roles & Permissions
Why can't I choose a role when I sign up?
Choosing a role at signup was deprecated in app version 1.7.1 and above. Group roles (Secretary, Treasurer, Chairperson, Member) are now assigned by the Secretary when adding a member instead.
Why does my app role show as "User" even though I created a group?
Your app role stays "User" permanently, even after creating a group — Secretary, Treasurer, Chairperson, and Member are group-level roles, not app-level ones. See Roles & Permissions.
Can I change a member's role after adding them?
Within the first 48 hours of adding a member, the Secretary can change their role directly. After that, role changes for Member, Chairperson, and Treasurer go through support.
How do I change our group's Secretary?
Contact support with the reason for the change and both the current and proposed Secretary's details. The Kosalo team confirms with the current Secretary, then the proposed new one — once all three parties (Chairperson, current Secretary, proposed Secretary) agree, the change is made and members are notified by email or SMS.
Groups & Cycles
Can I change our group type after setup?
No. Group type — Table Banking, Merry-Go-Round, or Hybrid — is locked in once group setup is complete. Choose carefully during Group Creation & Setup.
Can I change our savings frequency after setup?
Yes. Unlike group type, frequency isn't locked in — a Secretary can change it later from Group Settings. See Group Creation & Setup for the full breakdown of daily, weekly, and monthly options.
What is a cycle in Kosalo?
A cycle is a fresh contribution period a group starts — for example, a new year or a new term. Length depends on your group's agreement: some run 8 or 12 months, others run weekly up to week 52. See Cycles.
How do I start a new cycle?
Only a Secretary can start a new cycle. Go to the Cycles page in the menu sidebar, tap Start New Cycle, and give it a name. Figures reset to zero for the new cycle, and the previous one is archived — you can always tap into it to view past records.
What happens to members when a new cycle starts?
Existing members are kept by default. The Secretary can add new members joining in the new cycle, or remove members no longer part of the group — removing someone doesn't delete their data from the previous cycle, it just removes them going forward.
Our group grew past our plan's member limit after starting a new cycle — what do we do?
Contact support to request a plan upgrade. For example, if you were on Starter (max 15 members) and your new cycle brings you to 20, you'd need to move up to Standard (up to 50 members).
Members
How do I add a member to my group?
Only the Secretary can add members. Go to the Members page and tap the contact button in the bottom right. All you need is the member's name and phone number — they don't need to have the app installed yet. See Adding Group Members & Officials.
What happens when a member I added signs up on their own?
If they sign up using the same phone number you added them with, their account links automatically to their existing member record — their contribution history carries over, nothing needs to be re-entered.
How do I assign a Treasurer or Chairperson?
You can assign a role right when adding a member. For an existing member, tap Edit on their member card, select the role, and update the record — this is available within the first 48 hours of adding them. See Roles & Permissions.
Can I edit or remove a member after adding them?
Yes — a Secretary can edit a member's details if there's a wrong entry, and can remove a member from the group, which takes them out from the current cycle onward. Removing a member doesn't delete any of their existing records or contributions.
Contributions & Loans
Can I edit a contribution, payout, loan, or penalty after saving it?
Yes, but only within the first 48 hours of recording it. After that window, contact support for help. See Recording Contributions and Loans Manually.
What's the difference between the two + buttons on the Activity page?
The + next to the list of periods adds a new period (a week, month, or day). The green + button in the bottom right is for adding a record within the period you've already selected — they're separate buttons for separate things.
Is AI Scan available for all group types?
Not yet — AI Scan currently supports Table Banking groups only. We're working to bring it to Merry-Go-Round and Hybrid groups soon. In the meantime, those groups can record manually — see Recording Contributions and Loans Manually.
AI Scan read the wrong amount — what do I do?
Fix it during the review step before submitting — tap Edit on the card and correct it. If you've already submitted, you can still edit manually within 48 hours. See Recording Contributions and Loans via AI Scan.
Our record book identifies members by number instead of name — can I still use AI Scan?
Yes. Turn on the "members identified by numbers" option, and also provide a picture matching each number to a name (e.g. "1. Emily, 2. Caroline"). Names must match your Members list exactly.
Our group deducts loan interest upfront — how do I record that?
Record the interest as a paid loan alongside the principal you actually handed the member. For example, on a KES 5,000 loan with 10% deducted upfront: record issued loan as KES 5,000, and paid loan as KES 500. Contact support if you'd like clarity on this for your group.
Reports
Why does our Group Report show two different views?
This happens for Hybrid groups — you'll see both the Table Banking and Merry-Go-Round versions of your report, and can switch between them at any time. See Reports.
Why does "loan issued" look bigger than our total savings?
This is normal. Loan issued accumulates even after loans are repaid, and it always reflects the total since the cycle started — it isn't a sign something's wrong with your records.
Who can see the Individual Report vs. the Group Report?
Any member can view their own Individual Report; officials can view any member's. The Group Report is visible to all members equally — everyone sees the same view.
Payments & Subscription
How long is the free trial?
Every group created comes with a free 1-month trial. See Group Creation & Setup.
